Fearless Force

Fearless Force

Rooted in years of work focused on developing more empathetic children, BE FEARLESS BE KIND, Hasbro’s signature philanthropic initiative, is designed to empower kids to have the empathy, compassion and courage to stand up for others and be inclusive in their lives.  Through a coalition of best-in-class non-profit partners that recognize the importance of developing empathy in kids and teens, we’ve co-developed resources for parents and caring adults to educate, activate and celebrate kind kids as role models to their peers.  In 2018, we utilized these resources to develop a curriculum program, “The Fearless Force”. A group of Hasbro Employees was trained on topics of empathy, diversity, inclusion, bullying, design thinking, the United Nations Global Goals, service learning and more. The employees delivered a monthly curriculum that addressed the topics of bullying, the United Nations Global Goals for Sustainable Development and introduced themes of inclusion and empathy.

More than 650 children were able to receive monthly visits from Hasbro employees, with a minimum of 9 hours curriculum time over the course of the school year. They, along with their teachers, were exposed the United Nations Global Goals and the World’s Largest Lesson Curriculum. They also were introduced to resources from Special Olympics Unified Schools, NO BULLY, and Design for Change. Through a partnership with Design for Change USA, the curriculum included a design thinking activity that students used to craft a service project to address injustice in their community.

One project resulted in a collaboration between a third-grade classroom and local government officials to address school-zone safety. The students, who walk to school daily, were concerned about speeding in their school zone. They wrote letters to the chief of police, the mayor, local companies and held a march for safety demonstration. Their efforts resulted in a partnership between the school and local officials to install speeding cameras and more signage in the area to encourage drivers to slow down so kids feel safe walking to school.

Hasbro, Inc., through its BE FEARLESS BE KIND philanthropic initiative, matched $100,000 of the funds raised, to ensure all four playgrounds could become a reality. In 2018, Peaceful Hearts Playgrounds opened in Friendswood, Texas, San Juan Puerto Rico and Islamorada, Florida. One more playground will be built in wildfire-impacted Paradise, California.

Jill McManigal, executive director and co-founder of Kids for Peace said, "Thanks to the kindness and compassion of thousands of students, families and committed partners like Hasbro who contributed through The Great Kindness Challenge Kind Coins for Hurricane Relief Campaign, we are so excited to build these beautiful playgrounds with members of the community, and to bring children the healing power of play."

Global Day of Joy

2018 marked our 6th annual Global Day of Joy, our company-wide day of service. Every year employees in 40 offices around the world take one day to volunteer in their local communities.

This year we added a new aspect to the program and introduced the United Nations’ Global Goals. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals, or Global Goals, are a universal call to action to end extreme poverty, inequality and climate change by 2030.

We tracked impact against 6 of the 17 goals: #1 No Poverty, #2 Zero Hunger, #3 Good Health & Well-Being, #4 Quality Education, #10 Reduced Inequalities, #16 Peace, Justice & Strong Institutions.

Working with our development team, we built an internal platform to encourage employees around the world to share their actions that supported the goals by sending in a photo and tagging the applicable goal.

Actions included volunteering in food pantries, donating school supplies to educators, building an inclusive playroom, packing food for children to take home over the holiday break, supporting a family homeless shelter, volunteering at local children’s hospitals and more.
