Hasbro Designers and the RI School of Design Opened a Door to the Arts for Urban Youth

Project Open Door (POD) is a college access initiative for urban youth facilitated by the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). The organization draws creative teens attending high school in the state’s urban core cities to participate in free art and design programming that supports them in finishing school and pursuing further education or careers in the artistic space.

Hasbro partnered with RISD to fund and co-develop the Summer Studio, a week-long program for POD teens interested in graphic design, product development and entertainment media content creation.

Hasbro employees were deeply involved in the planning and success of the 2017, 2018 and 2019 Summer Studios. Not only did volunteers meet with POD staff to co-conceive the week-long program, but they also co-taught the sessions with the POD studio instructor. The Hasbro designers were at the studio each morning, introducing students to the concepts behind toy and game design and helping them to experience the playful and creative process of being a designer.

This program is a mutually beneficial collaboration to engage opportunity youth in creative programming while establishing a pipeline for diverse talent in our workforce.

Each summer, two of Hasbro’s coveted design internships are reserved for alum of the POD Hasbro Summer Studio program during their Sophomore or Junior summer of college.

A spokesperson from the organization explained, “POD’s work can have a major impact on the lives of our teens. Not only do the educational and experiential opportunities that we afford our students benefit them, we know that their participation in our program can help them to graduate from high school and have an impact on their chosen field in their education and career…We are very proud that from the past three years 100% of our teens graduated from high school and the vast majority went on to enroll in college.”

Dr. Paul Sproll, the program’s director stated of the partnership, “We are so appreciative to have Hasbro as such a staunch partner in providing diverse, under resourced RI urban teens attending public schools with access to high-quality art & design programming.”

We support the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) Good Grief Camp, which provides ongoing support for children who have lost a loved one in U.S. Military service, helping them to cope, remember and heal. Some of our employees from Hasbro’s Military Families Network group volunteer at the Good Grief Camp each year, sharing their experience of loss and helping others through the same.

"It was an honor to see firsthand the impact Hasbro has on these struggling families. One of the most touching moments for me was watching the children from previous years stand up to be recognized as mentors for the next generation of campers." - Team Hasbro Volunteer

Campers use products like PLAY-DOH to help express emotions while classic games like MONOPOLY and CONNECT 4 give them the opportunity to bond with other children. Playing JENGA has become a tradition at the Good Grief Camp where the yearly tournament can only be described as "epic." TAPS says they "do what family does. We play, talk, laugh, cry, create traditions and honor the people who bring us together.”
